“Mengapa harus SARA?”
Pertanyaan itu sering saya dengar dari banyak orang. Terkait dengan beberapa materi saya tentang agama Islam dan kesalahan yg saya lihat di Indonesia. Juga mungkin melihat materi beberapa comic yang memang nyerempet seperti ras.
Saya akan menjawab, dengan sekaligus menceritakan sebuah film dokumenter berjudul
“Why We Laugh: Black comedians on black comedy”
Film ini bercerita bagaimana masyarakat kulit hitam, mencoba untuk menyembuhkan luka mereka atas penindasan, siksaan rasisme yang mereka alami selama ratusan tahun, dengan komedi dan dalam hal ini, Stand Up Comedy
They say, comedy is: tools of the spirit, by which we cut our path through the willowness of our despair
Banyak komedi datang dari menjadi bagian dlm sebuah komunitas yang tertekan.
Seperti musik, dgn lagu sebagai bentuk ekspresi jiwa, komedi juga jadi jalan keluar seseorang utk melakukan protes, tanpa harus jadi gila karena protes tersebut
Amerika dulu mengeksploitasi kulit hitam yang selalu digambarkan sebagai budak yang selalu salah di TV. Jadi dasar dari slapstick
Mereka distereotipkan untuk selalu seperti itu, dgn perangai yg selalu digambarkan kasar, dan tidak berbudaya
Sederhananya begini:
Terkadang, kita butuh ketawa, agar tidak terus menerus menangis
Nah, setiap komedian itu didefinisikan oleh era di mana mereka hidup
Bagaimana dan apa yang mereka ucapkan dan lakukan dalam komedi mereka, adalah refleksi jamannya..
Acara TV pertama dgn orang kulit hitam sebagai pemeran utama judulnya “Amos N Andy”. Yang intinya menceritakan 2 org kulit hitam dgn kenaifan dan kebodohannya sehingga jadi lucu.
Amos N Andy, diserang NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)
karena dianggap memberikan gambaran yang buruk akan orang orang kulit hitam di Amerika. Kesannya orang Amerika bodoh semua.
Akhirnya, setelah 1thn acara ini dihentikan.
Hari ini, banyak komedian hitam yang menyayangkan itu. Dgn berkata “Kalau tidak merasa seperti itu, ya jangan tersinggung. They’re not talking about you. Kalau protes karena satu satunya acara dgn bintang utama kulit hitam menunjukkan orang kulit hitam bodoh, jangan matikan acaranya tapi tambah pilihannya”
Betul juga, karena toh Three stooges tidak membuat kita merasa orang bule seperti itu semua..
Lalu munculah, comic bernama Redd Foxx
Beliau mengajarkan kita, sambil tertawa, otak kita mikir: benarkah, harusnya bagaimana, bisakah itu terjadi?
This was in the 60s, where racism isn’t just in the air, it was said verbally everywhere..
salah satu materi Foxx:
“I have a knife with me, coz I read in a magazine, that black men carry knives. So I rushed out and buy me one” 
)
Red Foxx mendetoksifikasi hal hal yg kita ucapkan hanya dlm hati atau gosipkan sembunyi2. He gets the poison out of our system and makes us healthy
Juga muncul nama seperti, Dick Gregory
Pada jaman di mana police brutality, racism, sangat sering terjadi, Gregory mensatirkan kesalahan kesalahan tersebut dlm komedinya
Membuat orang kulit putih ketawa tapi kemudian menyadari kesalahan besar dlm tatanan sosial di amerika serikat
Dick Gregory kemudian, jadi bintang tamu kulit hitam pertama yg muncul di The Tonite Show.
Dgn komedi, kulit putih membuka pintunya kpd seorang kulit hitam
Utk pertama kalinya org putih liat sesuatu yg menurut Gregory: ” white and black person in a human conversation for the first time on national TV”
Dick Gregory berperan penting dlm pergerakan kulit hitam di Amerika
In order to not let your problems make you go crazy, you gotta laugh about it.
Gregory pernah berkata;
“I’m gonna take this Nigger snake out the closet and de-fang it”
Dia lalu nulis auto-biography berjudul “Nigger”
Di halaman pertama, ada tulisan:
“Dear Momma, wherever you are, if ever you hear the word “Nigger” again, remember they’re advertising my book”
Di thn 70an, Amerika masih berjuang dgn rasisme.
Lahirlah, The Jeffersons. Sitcom prime time yang adalah komedi satir tentang masyarakat kulit hitam dan rasisme.
Jefferson digambarkan sebagai orang kulit hitam yg kaya tapi rasis.
Di mana anaknya, menikah dgn orang kulit putih
Tentu, tidak semua org kulit hitam rasis, tapi acara itu mencoba menunjukkan bahwa walau tidak semua org kulit hitam seperti itu, tapi orang seperti itu betul betul ada di Amerika. Dan bagaimana saking tololnya org kulit hitam yang seperti itu, jatohnya jadi lucu.
People reflect themselves, see the mistakes in themselves, laugh about it, and changed their lives..
Richard Pryor juga muncul di era ini.
Pryor adalah orang kulit hitam pertama yang bisa standup dan mencela orang kulit hitam, tanpa dirajam dan dipukulin setelahnya
Pengalaman hidup Pryor yg kaya membuatnya kaya akan materi lintas kultural
Menyaksikan Pryor di atas panggung membuat org kulit putih paham bagaimana rasanya jadi org kulit hitam. Dan membuat orang kulit hitam, paham rasanya menjadi orang kulit putih..
Pryor is a social spokes person who had a lot to say in times when America needed to hear it
In his bits, are social commentary.
Eddy Murphy came up with less racial tension. Makanya materinya tidak berbau politik-sosial.
Karena sudah tidak perlu lagi.
Kesedihan dan protes yg ada dlm benak masyarakat kulit hitam, sudah jauh berkurang.
Luka dalam tubuh Amerika sudah disembuhkan oleh para comic dgn cara mengakui adanya luka, lalu dgn sabar menyembuhkannya.
Dan bukan menyembunyikan, menyangkal adanya luka tersebuut sehingga boro boro bisa disembuhkan..
Now.

Sampai kapan kita mau pura pura berkelakuan seakan akan itu tidak ada?
Sampai kapan kita mau sembunyi sembunyi mengakui sebuah fakta?
Hanya karena kita takut perbedaan membawa perseteruan?
Lalu apa yang kita inginkan? Kita ingin perbedaan itu diseragamkan?
Semua perbedaan disembunyikan dibalik secarik kain putih?
Perbedaan itu bukan dijadikan satu, dijadikan bersatu.
Semua isu itu ada dan setiap kali kita menutupi dgn pura pura bodoh maka kita akan selalu tidak terbiasa untuk berpikiran terbuka.
Whoopi Goldberg punya materi standup yg berbunyi:
“Like the ‘N’ word. Everyone says ‘don’t say it again’. Its a bad word. You see its not bad to me coz I dont know any (nigger) and I’ve never been one”
Intinya dari ucapan Whoopi, jangan sensi.
Kalau ga merasa begitu, ga perlu merasa terganggu
Susah memang, tapi pasti bisa.
